CMC-AB Virtual Happy Hour

The Alberta Virtual Happy Hour is held the first Thursday of every month.  We encourage CMCs, associate members, and those interested in the profession across Alberta and Canada to join us for a discussion on different topics relevant to the management consulting profession.   Typically, we start with a conversation starter where 1-2 learned colleagues share their knowledge on a particular subject and afterwards break out into discussion groups.

This an opportunity to get together with colleagues, enjoy a beverage (virtually), and share ideas on how we can move forward together through these challenging times.   CMCs can claim 2 CPD credits towards your annual CPD compliance.

This event is put on as a collaboration by CIs across the country. Members from Atlantic to BC, and everywhere in between, are encouraged to join and meet fellow consultants part of the national CMC community.

December 3rd
Adapting Companies through Futurist Thinking

Overview: This discussion will explore a selection of interesting futurist perspectives and opportunities, and dives deeper into potential cultural, leadership, financial, risk management, and political barriers that might prevent creative and compelling opportunities from igniting within organizations and across industries. Management Consultants often find themselves in positions to ask thought-provoking questions that can move an idea forward – but in a world of speculative investment around an uncertain future, can the ultimate question of ‘should we invest’ be shifted to ‘how might we…’ to help a company realize new possibilities?

January 7th
Consulting Contract to Contract

Overview: Ann MacTaggart, CPA, CA, CMC will lead us through a session that explores the risk and rewards of contract work and discusses her experiences and ideas to fit contracting into your life, put bread on the table, and minimize downtime

February 4th
Leading within Complexity

Overview: Christina Comeau is researching the skills needed to lead in complexity and how to encourage leaders to learn and adopt these skills.  Her work centers on leveraging the principles of complexity science to resolve complex challenges.   That said, complexity appears to be the harder path, but it may also me the right path. There are some who say it is the only path to resolve the relentless, intractable problems that face humanity.  Of course, this is an ongoing discussion.  One that you are invited to participate in.
There are many interpretations of what complexity is and what emergence is.  Christina looks at complexity as a concept that describes how all natural living systems actually function.  Emergence strikes her as being what a natural living system does to nurture and sustain all that lies within the context of a particular complex system.   The trouble is emergence can be inconvenient, if you happen to have a different agenda in mind.  That's the rub, leading complexity asks that leaders adopt a different stance than the ones commonly used to control a situation and direct particular outcomes.

Christina will discuss the interim findings of her research and moderate a group discussion that links our lived experience with the skills needs to manage complexity.

CMC Book Club Express is a fun and easy way to explore new books on leadership and management, get to know other CMC members, laugh and meet one of your  professional development requirements.

HOW IT WORKS

Each month a book summary is selected from the Youexec.Com collection of book summaries.  Youexec.com is an executive resource portal used by over 900,000 executives worldwide. Membership to the portal is one of the benefits of your CMC membership.
